I have both McAfee Security Center and Avast antivirus (free edition) on my PC. McAfee just sent me a notice saying that my subscription will expire soon and an offer to renew it at $69.99 for another year. Avast is working fine and is free. Can I do without the McAfee and just keep Avast? Or do the other features of McAfee (anti-spam, anti-hacker, anti-abuse) worth the money? Are there other free software programs for these other features that could make up for what McAfee offers without paying $70.00/year? Thanks.

Avast Final Verdict On the whole, we found Avast to be better in terms of overall protection because it goes so far as to provide even social network monitoring. However, if you’re a business, McAfee might make more practical sense because of the single license advantage. Cactusj i completely agree with u.avast is much better.i didn't even try mcafee coz i knew how gd it was.in my opinion the only gd antivirus that deserves as commercial is nod32.and the only gd internet suite is bitdefender.but i love avast home and its totally free. McAfee and Norton are two poor choices. Preinstalled versions are commonly immediately removed by experienced users when they buy a new laptop.
My preference is for AVG 2011 (Free) Anti-Virus coupled with SuperAntiSpyware. Malwarebytes is installed as a one time scanner in reserve. I have used AVG for a number of years with few problems.

Here is what I use and recommend : (These are all Free versions and very effective.)
Avast and Prevx have proven extremely reliable and compatible with everything I have
thrown at them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE and Prevx or Avast and Prevx however not all 3.
Avast Home Free - stop any shields you do not need except leave File System, Web,
and Network running (Script and Behavior are also recommended in Ver 6+).

Windows Defender (not needed if using MSE)
IE - Protected Mode
IE 8 - SmartScreen Filter ON (IE 7 Phishing Filter)
I also have IE to always start with InPrivate Filter active if IE 8.

right of IE)

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever suspect malware, and that
would be unsual with Avast and Prevx running except for an occasional low level cookie
(no big deal), UPDATE it and then run it as a scanner. I have many scanners and they
never find anything of note since I started using this setup.

We differ over preferences but you slipped in quietly the Windows Firewall. I suspect problems occur for many using third party firewalls deciding they need to stop phoning home. However, your strategic thinking would seem to coincide with mine. Keep the nasties out and you do not need to worry about phoning home. If a nasty gets in hit it over the head quick with Malwarebytes!

No. I know that some say AVG is problematic but, although I am greatly involved troubleshooting problems, it is not often that AVG is implicated. Having said that I have one current thread where there is a problem involving a repeating Windows Update. It could be that AVG has misidentified two updates. I have made suggestions and we shall see how it develops.
I do not know a lot about Kaspersky. The problems I see are Norton and McAfee which can kill system performance. Norton causes major problems with system restore, which is a subject I often post about. Norton also really goes to places it should not go. Concentrating a lot on Event Viewer reports once I discover Norton is installed it adds another dimension to troubleshooting.

I want to know which is best AVG or Mcafee
AVG is *much* better than McAfee (and unlike McAfee, it's also free). McAfee and Norton are, in my view and that of many of us here, the two worst choices available.
However, although AVG used to be one of the best choices, it no longer is. Today there are better choices available.
For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, if you are willing to pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, I recommend one (do not run more than one) of the following three:
Avira AntiVir
Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials
You also need anti-spyware software. I recommend that you download and
install (freeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware.
AVG has been involved in over a hundred issues that I have seen here on Answers
which is a small subset of the problems it is known to cause or to be associated
and it is just as bad on performance issues as Norton and McAfee, and maybe worse.
AVG used to be a favorite a few years back however it has definitely joined the ranks
of the over-bloated with compatibility issues. There may be a MVP that still recommends
AVG however if there is I do not know of it. And you can remove AVG and replace Kaspersky
in the above and it still holds true.
Although I prefer Avast and MSE, either with Prevx - Free, eSet and Avira that Ken mentions
are two other good choices.
No doubt that MBAM is the recommended scanner. SAS Portable is another one, not the
Free or Pro version as those still load too many resident functions which cause system
issues. SAS (Free and Pro), SpyBot, and Adaware all need to have their resident functions
stopped so the can be used as on-demand scanners.

A well known MVP, who often posts on Windows Update and Security issues, that I know ( and you would if I mentioned the name ) also has similar views. Whenever, I have asked questions outside these forums he used to thrust his views on me so much without listening to what I said that in the end I had to tell him his views were no longer welcome. I had demonstrated time and time again that the points made about AVG and scanning incoming mail just did not cut any ice on my computer.
All users have security software preferences. I have mine and they work for me.
