To first of all to answer the ever re-appearing question 'I have a Mac, do I really need antivirus?': Yes, you do. It does not need to be a virus that affects OS X, you could inadvertendly cause an infection of others by you forwarding or sharing infected files. If you are in business and infect your customers, that is the sure way out of business.
I do not share the experience of any slow-downs by Avast at all. To the contrary, the use of cycles of Avast seems to be much less than other antivirus I have used over the years.
Apart from the ransomware shield and webshield, I particularly appreciate the e-mail shield of Avast, as we have been subject to a barrage of phishing and malware loaded e-mails, which all other antivirus did not detect. While I am certainly capable of identifying problematic e-mails, my associates may not. DIY also consumes precious time.
I don't share the experience of excessive invasiveness by Avast. In fact, I experience no invasiveness at all.
At the time of this writing, based on my experience, Avast antivirus is the best for Mac, in my opinion.
- All the shields come back except for the web shield, with Avast showing the message 'Protection Service Stopped - Please Run The Avast Service First To Activate This Shield'. I looked into my services and only see one Avast service, and it's already running.
- Mac Security has a file system shield, a mail shield and a web shield. The file system shield protects against malware in files and apps and it also reports PUPs. The mail shield checks incoming emails in apps like Mail (not web-based mail like Gmail) and removes malicious attachments.
Besides the World’s most popular antivirus for Windows, Avast is offering a comprehensive antivirus for Apple Mac OS X (Macintosh). The product is called Avast Free Mac Security 2018 (version 11) and same as the Windows version it’s completely for free. It doesn’t even require the registration, so you can just download, install and use it without any hassle.
For those who want to use avast virus protection can definitely use it but for this problem I have found a fix, Just by going to the settings and disabling web shield & mail shield fixes the SSL Issue.
While some Mac users are still questioning the need for the antivirus/security software on OS X, we definitely recommend have Avast installed as the number of hacker attacks on Mac users is rising rapidly.

Avast Security Pro for Mac – Is it worthy to pay extra?
Besides the free version of Mac antivirus, there is also a premium one called Avast Security Pro for Mac. The pro version offers two extra features
- Wi-Fi Alerts – This feature will immediately notify you if someone connects to your Wi-Fi network. This helps you to keep hackers/neighbors out of your network.
- Ransomware Shield – Ransomware shields keep your personal data from being encrypted without your permission.
For these, you need to pay for the premium version which costs $59.99 per year. Is it worthy? We would say yes as ransomware on Mac is on the rise and Avast offers solid protection against it.
