Just did an AVAST virus scan, the following items were UNABLE TO SCAN.
The list took 4 1/2 full screen pages.(168 items) Each of the following had numerous files with the same reason for being unable to scan.
Spybot files.... Unable to scan: Archive is password protected.
Ad-Aware... Unable to scan: Archive is password protected.
HP 940 drivers... Unable to scan: ZIP archive is corrupted.
HP 940-enu-xp ... Unable to scan: ZIP archive is corrupted.
WINZIP32.EX_ ... Unable to scan: Archive is password protected.
CanoScan ... Unable to scan: ZIP archive is corrupted.
Cleaner... Unable to scan: Archive is password protected.
winent50.exe Unable to scan: Archive is password protected.
KNOPPIX_V3.9 Unable to scan: The file is a decompression bomb.
The file is a decompression bomb. WHAT does this mean??
I did not password protect any of the files, just wondering why they are marked as such.
As for the corrupted files, they worked last time I tried them??
The results of the scan...NO INFECTED FILES>
But I wonder about effectiveness of AVAST if it can not scan so many files.
Is this any reason to be concerned about AVAST AV?
Thanks
Ben
Full System Scan Avast
I've been having problems with antivirus programs in general.
I've been using Avast for the last couple years and it was doing fine until a few days ago when I booted up my laptop and it warned me that it had stopped working after about 10 minutes of serious lag (which is not normal for my laptop).
I tried uninstalling it from the Control Panel but the uninstallation process crashed due to an apphang. I then tried using aswclear (Avast uninstall utility) to clean it out directly to no avail as it said it could not run after downloading due to corrupted/invalid file signature. I then simply saved aswclear and ran it in safe mode, and that apparently uninstalled/deleted Avast from my laptop.
Tried reinstalling Avast again but after the setup.exe is installed and the security scan completes the download tells me 'The signature of avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe is corrupt or invalid' giving me the option to delete the setup or view downloads.
Saving the setup and trying to run it in safe mode doesn't work either, it tells me the same thing.
I downloaded AVG (again, as I used it a couple years back for a bit and it worked fine but switched to Avast as I found it better) so I would be protected and to see if I picked up a virus that corrupted Avast; didn't pick up anything. It worked for a day or two and then that had a corrupted error that severely slowed my laptop. Went through hell to get it off my laptop as it wouldn't uninstall. Eventually came to doing a system restore to a point right before I downloaded the dang thing and after I uninstalled Avast.
I still feel as though there are leftover AVG or Avast files in my laptop or leftover registry.
I have run CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Norton Power Eraser to find any leftover files, viruses or malware causing me these problems but they don't seem to be picking up on anything. I attempted using Kaspersky virus scan but it crashed on me as well due to an apphang and continues to do so everytime it successfully downloads and I click the Next option.
I am not having any other problems with my laptop besides this. I'm pretty frustrated as I'm browsing unprotected right now. :
Malwarebytes still works though. It just appears to be Antivirus programs that my laptop won't cooperate with. I want to stick with Avast as it's the best free antivirus program I've used.
I should also mention that Avast works fine on my desktop which operates on Windows Vista.
I've heard Avast updates in the past have come up corrupted but this problem only seems to be occurring for me on my laptop...
Can anyone give me a solution to my problem and why this is occurring? I'm not even sure of what a corrupted or invalid file signature means.
Using an Asus laptop and Windows 7 64 bit.
Thanks in advance.

Encrypted files, ZIP archives, and system files which are in use often cannot be scanned. To view the non-scanned file details do the following: In the Avast program go to Reports and click Open next to the report details you want to view. In the scan report window right-click and choose Non-scanned. Security software preventing users from virus and malware are the only thing that we can count on when it comes to our daily computing. It is really miserable when you come across errors occurring even in the antivirus or firewall that you trust. Encrypted files, ZIP archives, and system files which are in use often cannot be scanned. To view the non-scanned file details do the following: In the Avast program go to Reports and click Open next to the report details you want to view. In the scan report window right-click and choose Non-scanned. Go to the Avast’s Preferences menu. Click on a tiny lock and enter admin’s passcode. Uncheck (disable) File System Shield, Mail Shield, and Web Shield one-by-one. Close all windows and place the Avast’s icon into the Trash. Reboot to see if it worked. Mind that dragging the app’s icon to the Trash is never enough. Click that icon, then click the Show Certificate button in the sheet window that drops down. The certificate should be issued by Google Internet Authority, which in turn falls under the authority of GeoTrust Global. If you see anything different, you may be the victim of a man-in-the-middle attack.
